Equity-Centered Assessment Instruments

According the Center for Urban Education, at USC, "The term “Equity-Mindedness” refers to the perspective or mode of thinking exhibited by practitioners who call attention to patterns of inequity in student outcomes. These practitioners are willing to take personal and institutional responsibility for the success of their students, and critically reassess their own practices. Practing Equity-Centered Assessment requires that practitioners are race-conscious and aware of the social and historical context of exclusionary practices in American Higher Education."

In this collection, we highlight assessment tools that are designed to be explicitly conscious of race, ethnicity & the history of exclusionary practices in education, and therefore, to help the practitioner or the institution practice equity-minded assessment of student learning and the student experience.

Assessment for Social Justice Collection

According to McArthur (2016; see article within this folder):

"Assessment for social justice is a two-pronged concept.  It refers both to the justice of assessment within higher education, and to the role of assessment in nurturing the forms of learning that will promote greater social justice within society as a whole."

This collection includes definitions, models, a list of case studies, a list of suggested instruments, and more. Assessment for Social Justice is a relatively new area of professional practice which coalesced into a movement in North America in 2018.  It has a rich scholarly & theoretical history, however, dating back to at least 1977.

Cross-cultural articles and blogs

This is a collection of potentially useful articles for introducing cross- and intercultural topics, attitudes, and perspectives. These articles are not yet associated with experiential activities. Therefore, caution should be used when sharing these articles with participants, especially for inexperienced practitioners. Some of the content in these articles may be polarizing and without proper context, facilitation, and debriefing may cause participants to shut down, become combative/defensive, or reject ideas intended to foster growth. Use with caution.

White Fragility and Its Critiques

In her 2018 book, White fragility: Why it's so hard for white people to talk about racism, Robin DiAngelo identifies why white people often have negative reactions (anger, fear, guilt, etc.) when asked to challenge their assumptions about race and points out how these negative reactions perpetuate racial injustice. Her arguments have been both lauded -- Ibram X. Kendi recommends it for white readers on his anti-racist reading list -- and criticized. This collection brings together the book and several perspectives on it in hopes of stimulating productive reflection around antiracism.
