2022 SIETAR USA National Conference - Who Writes History

Category: Workshop
Description:

Presenter:
Annette K. Benson, MS.
Senior Public Relations Consultant
Purdue University-Main Campus
Lafayette, IN

Annette Benson serves as the Senior Public Relations Consultant for the Center for Intercultural Learning, Mentorship, Assessment and Research (CILMAR) and as the manager of the Intercultural Learning Hub (HubICL), a science gateway providing a platform for intercultural learning, global learning, and DEI professionals to share expertise and resources worldwide.

Description:
It all started with a Reivisionist History podcast by Malcolm Gladwell called "Who Writes History." After listening to it, we wrote a rather simple lesson plan which became more academically robust by asking faculty to critique it and eventually became (at last count) three different lesson plans, each with a different purpose. In this session, we will delve into the case study this story provides, transparently discussing the harm we might have done with the original lesson plan and why the later iterations were more academically sound. If you've ever wanted to create your own intercultural learning activities with a podcast or movie as the catalyst, you will not want to miss this workshop.
