Empathy is often featured as a highly desirable skill that is central to intercultural competence and intercultural humility. Yet empathy has a shadow side: empathy in and of itself may be used for harm. This module explores intercultural empathy as a key type of empathy that can help bridge cultural differences and support others. By completing this module, you will be able to:

  • Define intercultural empathy as opposed to several other kinds of empathy.
  • Explain the Platinum Rule.
  • Identify at least one example of successful intercultural empathy.
  • Reflect on your own strengths and areas for improving your intercultural empathy.
