2022 NAFSA Region VI and VIII Conference - A toolkit for building intercultural empathy through non-verbal communication

Category: Workshop
Description:

Chair:
Annette K. Benson, MS.
Senior Public Relations Consultant
Purdue University-Main Campus
Lafayette, IN

Description:
The AAC&U has determined that intercultural empathy and non-verbal communication are learnable skills and essential facets of intercultural knowledge and competence; this leaves some wondering  how to use professional development time to aid faculty, staff, and students to practice these skills in order to strengthen their ability to bridge across culture. This session gives an overview of games, activities, and assessments which can be used for teaching these intercultural skills.

Learning Objectives:

  • Define intercultural empathy and non-verbal communication.
  • Define the difference between empathy as commonly defined and intercultural empathy.
  • Discuss why empathy and non-verbal communication are considered intercultural skills.
  • Demonstrate multiple ways to teach non-verbal communication while developing intercultural empathy.

When: Thursday 17 November, 2022, 1:30 pm - 2:10 pm EST
Where: Omni William Penn Hotel - 530 William Penn Place Pittsburgh, PA 15219 - Room 7
