HubICL Hubbub, February 2024

Welcome to the HubICL Hubbub, the newsletter that offers you the latest buzz on all that’s happening in the Hub!

New PDZ Blocks

If you haven’t been in the HubICL's Professional Development Zone (PDZ) in a while, you’ll want to take a look at the latest blocks of intercultural learning (ICL) offered there. Created as self-learning modules by the Purdue CILMAR staff, the PDZ blocks offer train-the-trainer content for experienced and novice ICL professionals. This month we are highlighting:

Transformative Learning Theory 101 for Intercultural Mentors
https://hubicl.org/pdz/block/99
Instructor: Kris Acheson-Clair, PhD
A basic course to introduce higher education professionals to the theory of adult "transformative learning." Includes readings, videos, and reflective activities.

"Transformative" has become a buzz word in higher education, but what does that actually mean? What transforms, and how? What counts as transformative learning? How do we know transformation is actually occurring? This course will introduce higher education professionals, especially those working in the intercultural/international/DEI fields, to decades of research surrounding Transformative Learning (TL) Theory. Self-directed modules are structured in accessible chunks of information and engage participants in reflection about their own experiences both as learners and mentors. Course objectives include being able to: 1) articulate the difference between (any or good) learning and transformative learning; 2) connect TL theory to other disciplines; 3) apply TL theory to concrete experiences; and 4) plan for supporting and assessing the transformative learning of others.

The course includes videos on:
The history of Transformative Learning Theory
Transformative Learning Terminology
Designing Experiences for Transformation
Facilitating Transformation
Transformative Learning Activity Demonstration

Happy 6th Birthday to the HubICL!

Each year we celebrate that momentous day in February 2018 when staff members from CILMAR and HUBzero® met for the first time to discuss the creation of the Intercultural Learning Hub—2000+ days ago.

In honor of the Hub’s birthday, we want to thank the following for their long-time support of the HubICL:

We are looking forward to seeing several of those listed above at the HubICL’s birthday party this Friday at the 2024 WISE conference, hosted by Global Wake Forest in beautiful Winston-Salem, North Carolina.
