I recently used this activity with new study abroad leaders and it generated some interesting conversations around perspective. This activity challenged them to move toward a consensus of perspective with limited communication relying more heavily on non-verbals and empathetic assumptions. This activity can very quickly and succinctly introduce a skill to participants that is extremely valuable in foreign contexts--without access to a common language, travelers often need to interpret meaning with limited input. This is a skill that needs to be developed, but requires specific contexts to practice. This activity helps promote this sort of skill building by bringing the practice and its immediate effects into awareness.
