This article complicates the idea of empathy as an attainable and even desirable intercultural skill. It is recommended for educators, facilitators, and learners who value complexity, who study or direct study in other cultural contexts, and who are concerned about equity and bridging cultural difference.  The curator of this tool recommends the following: "If I were using it, I would develop significantly different [discussion] questions according to group, esp. undergrads vs. grad students and faculty/instructors/facilitators. For example, with undergrads I would have a series of pre-questions to engage what they already know and/or believe, and I would ask some general comprehension questions before working toward a critical reading. With grad students and faculty/instructors/facilitators, I would go almost straight to a critical reading but would also ask them how the ideas might inform their own work in teaching empathy."
