I developed this activity in 2018 as I prepared to teach an undergraduate seminar on intercultural competence at Boston College. From previous experience I knew that it could be challenging for students to wrap their heads around the whole idea of "cultural values", so I wanted to offer them a way into identifying some of their own cultural values—starting with what they learned as children.

It can feel quite personal for learners to talk about their childhood with someone else, so I would suggest that this activity works best for participants who have already spent some time getting to know each other as part of a course, program, or workshop.
