In the vein of the classic anthropological reading Nacirema, which turns the analytical eye back on "mainstream" US culture from the 1950s, this activity is a fruitful exploration of how the US looks from the outside - what about our culture may be hard to understand for those who don't just accept norms and values because they grew up with them - as well as a critique of the language US media often uses to describe other cultures (that is rarely applied to US culture itself). I think it would be a really useful activity for TESOL teachers in training and anyone in the fields of communication, media studies, journalism. I can also see it being used in adult learning situations (outside of higher education). One strength is the inductive approach. Another is the concreted examples used - they are fun to read and engaging to think about.
