    This is a very applied reading that offers useful strategies for "figuring things out" in unfamiliar cultural territory. The excerpt included makes a good pre-reading for study abroad or virtual exchange, a nice undergraduate level intro activity for later ethnographic work, and preparatory advice for expats or other sojourners. I like to use this reading/discussion activity first and follow it with something more experiential such as (at an intro level) Grocery Store Ethnography or (more advanced) Martian Anthropology.
