When I was doing professional development with a group of student leaders who had gotten comfortable with one another but had also gotten rather stuck in the roles they naturally played--extrovert, clown, quiet one, forceful--I purposefully assigned them roles that went against character. Walking a mile in someone else's shoes let each of them experience otherness and gave an opportunity for developing the skill of empathy.
