Note: This activity asks participants to use Panoramio, a former geotagging photo sharing site that was connected to Google Maps and Google Earth. Unfortunately, Google discontinued this site in 2016, so it is no longer available. As an alternative, we recommend Mapillary. Mapillary works similarly to Panoramio and Google Maps/Google Earth in that it allows individuals to upload geotagged photos that can then be accessed through a map interface: https://www.mapillary.com/

This is a fairly low-threat way to talk about difference, thus good for learners in denial and polarization, as well as those in other stages of the intercultural competence continuum. For the right group of students, it can also lead to good discussions of the fact that images do not necessarily elicit the same meaning from one individual to another or to how to effectively communicate non-verbally.
