Activity created by Wei Qiu, Purdue University, Global Engineering Programs and Partnerships, based on the following:

Horowitz, A. (2014). On looking: A walker's guide to the art of observation. Scribner.

Tishman, S. (2017). Slow looking: The art and practice of learning through observation. Routledge.

This activity was submitted by Wei Qiu in fulfillment of the requirements of the Intercultural Pedagogy Grant program.

The activity can be easily adapted to a study abroad location or for a virtual course. The focus of the walk can be tailored for your disciplinary needs. For example, the tool author focuses on the localization of engineering solutions. The facilitator can focus on topics from any domain (advertisement design, power/group dynamics on the street, accommodation & accessibility, space design, etc.). The activity can also be done by one student or in pairs that involve a local individual or a classmate.
