With Tatjana Babic Williams and others, I am co-authoring an article that compares the intercultural development of students in face-to-face vs. virtual versions of the three intercultural labs offered in this curriculum. Our research demonstrates no significant differences in development based on mode. However, in coding and rating student reflections using the AAC&U Intercultural Knowledge & Competence VALUE Rubric, we consistently found statements that we rated as 2 or higher (out of 4) for openness and curiosity -- the targeted learning outcomes of this curriculum. Moreover, we often found statements that registered 2 or higher for other domains on the rubric, most notably cultural self-awareness, communication, and empathy. I recommend looking at this curriculum and adapting it for other novice language courses.
