In July 2016, I had the opportunity to attend the 5-day "Training Design for Intercultural Learning Workshop," facilitated by Dr. Janet M. Bennett and Dr. R. Michael Paige, at the Summer Institute for Intercultural Communication at Reed College in Portland, Oregon. At the time, I had no idea that six years later both would be gone. I was so happy at the time to be able to learn from these two masters and even more grateful now. Of all of the content covered during that week, "Beans Don't Have Culture" is the activity which has stayed with me the longest. I hope that you find it as memorable and useful as I have.

In our HubICL curation, we have included the more discussion-based version facilitated by Bennett and Paige and a newer simulation version created by Dr. Aletha Stahl and Kelsey Patton. The simulation was piloted with two groups of Purdue University undergraduate students from the College of Agriculture's Issues 360 Institute on January 21, 2023, by Stahl and Patton.
