Ask participants to pair up with someone who is different from themselves (The facilitator may want to use an intercultural “sorting” activity to ensure that the pairs are diverse). Participants should greet their partner and fill out the first page of the hand out together so they have some demographic data on which to base their assumptions. Participants should not look at the second page until instructed to do so. After participants have gathered the demographic data, they should be instructed to fill out the second page without talking to their partner. After all parties are finished filling out the second page, the pairs should share their guesses with each other and determine if they made correct guesses. The facilitator can debrief the pairs and whole group focusing particularly on the assumptions the pairs made about each other, how those assumptions were made, and what they got right and what they didn’t get right. The facilitator could also use this activity to discuss to what extend cultural and personality affect our preferences, behaviors, and values.
