We used this tool as part of our introductory and preparation meetings for our spring break Agriculture in Ireland study abroad course.  This was a great way for students to get to know one another while learning about how they make assumptions and generalizations about other people.  Some student were able to guess the answers to the questions by picking up on contextual clues about their partner.  However, a vast majority of the students quickly realized how off base their assumptions about the person they just met.  Very useful and a great conversation starter to our cultural content shared during the meeting.

I used this activity to facilitate a group of 10 in a Zoom setting. We conducted this in pairs. For time, I condensed to 25 minutes (5 for instructions, 20 for completion), and it seemed to provide sufficient time for conducting the activity. Some students already knew the basic questions related to their partner since they have been working with one another for the duration of the semester. However, many of the questions they did not know. We discussed that this activity seems beneficial for when you are acquainted with your partner, but not friends. We found that some responses could potentially upset a partner if the assumed answers are solely based on biases. I recommend that partners have some knowledge of each other prior to the activity -- perhaps the activity is used later in the semester as opposed to an icebreaker in the first few weeks. With regards to the Zoom, I did not have to adapt this activity much. I formatted the handout as a Word document and posted to the class page for participants to respond on the document rather than on a printed sheet.
