This 14-question survey instrument is an adaptation of the AAC&U Intercultural Competence Rubric. Use of this instrument in a formative mode, e.g. with supportive individual or group discussion and feedback from an expert, can help the learner understand attainment of intercultural competence as composed of discrete skills, as well as identify which ones require more work on his or her part.
This is a high face-validity instrument; as such one of its purposes is to help the learner identify and even mimic socially desirable behaviors. Use of this instrument as a formative assessment method has been found to enhance learner gains in intercultural competence as measured by common proprietary quantitative instruments.
Users who want to use the instrument in summative mode would be well advised to consider using the retrospective pretest method, rather than the traditional pre/post method. A version of the instrument which facilitates this method is available on the website.
