I'm in favor or any D.I.E. type activity that gets away from that unfortunate original acronym! Here are some things I really appreciate about this update to the classic:
1. It's theory based, synthesizing several constructs and theoretical frameworks effectively.
2. It goes beyond the cognitive to explore emotions in depth, and it front-loads this analysis where it belongs - at the beginning, where we actually experience emotions!
3. Like the original, it is highly adaptable and can be used with a variety of cultural artifacts (physical objects, images, etc.). This makes it ideal for virtual as well as face to face contexts.
I will say, though, that complexity is a double-edged sword. While the added detail in I DIVE is welcome, it does make it harder to remember what the acronym stands for and perhaps harder to use in the moment when you are struggling in real time with your reactions to cultural stimuli.
