Activity created by Dr. Kris Acheson-Clair, CILMAR, Purdue University, based on the following:

Hochschild, A.R. (1983). The managed heart: Commercialization of human feeling. University of California Press.

Martínez-Iñigo, D., Totterdell, P., Alocver, C.M., & Holman, D. (2007). Emotional labour and emotional exhaustion: Interpersonal and intrapersonal mechanisms. Work & Stress, 21, 30-47.

As a result of this activity, participants will be able to: 1. Identify and analyze the role of emotion labor in a particular profession. 2. Design their own case that takes into account how workers perform emotion labor in response to a challenge; the potential toll of emotion labor; differences in terms of gender, race, other social identities; and strategies for coping with emotion labor.
