Cultural Atlas: Etiquette

By clicking on each individual country, visitors on this site can navigate to etiquette practices from that particular country. This resource was developed as a collaborative project between SBS, International Education Services (IES), and Multicultural NSW. As a reminder to all users who visit this site, "cultural descriptions cannot be universally applied to all individuals within a particular culture, descriptions of dominant cultures are not representative of all individuals’ experiences." Exploring Etiquette Across Cultures

This collection provides activities to introduce and explore differences in performing etiquette across cultures in addition to articles that address issues of etiquette.

*While engaging with this collection, it is important to remember that like culture, etiquette practices evolve and change over time. In one resource, you might see a caution against talking about money in a particular area of the world, for example, and in another resource, you might see that talking about money in that same area of the world is appropriate. All this to say, perceptions, practices, values, behaviors, and more vary across cultures and individuals. We encouraging refraining from essentialism which can lead to stereotyping and using these resources to bring self and other awareness as even though etiquette rules may evolve over time, the concept of etiquette exists across cultures.
