PIM Tricky Communication

This collection provides resources from Purdue CILMAR's Portable Intercultural Module entitled, "Tricky Communication."

Portable Intercultural Modules (PIM) are small learning units focused on one or two elements of intercultural competence and/or diversity and inclusion. They are turnkey solutions that address the needs of instructors or co-curricular leaders who don't see themselves as experts in these areas. PIM can be embedded within disciplinary course content, and multiple PIM can be integrated throughout a program of study to support learners' development of intercultural competence more systematically.

CILMAR offers all Portable Intercultural Modules (PIM) through Brightspace and a selection through Moodle and Canvas. Self-directed training is also available to support instructors who wish to use the selected PIM.

Exploring Etiquette Across Cultures

This collection provides activities to introduce and explore differences in performing etiquette across cultures in addition to articles that address issues of etiquette.

*While engaging with this collection, it is important to remember that like culture, etiquette practices evolve and change over time. In one resource, you might see a caution against talking about money in a particular area of the world, for example, and in another resource, you might see that talking about money in that same area of the world is appropriate. All this to say, perceptions, practices, values, behaviors, and more vary across cultures and individuals. We encouraging refraining from essentialism which can lead to stereotyping and using these resources to bring self and other awareness as even though etiquette rules may evolve over time, the concept of etiquette exists across cultures.
